Took a three-day bikepacking weekend and did a late-season ride in southern Utah. I’ve wanted to do this ride for a couple of years- was worth the wait. High 30’s to low 40’s at night, mid 60’s during the day. Short days meant starting at sunset the first day and riding on a moonless night for ten miles. Lights on I crawled up the Reef to camp at 6000 feet. Windy, cold but made for a stunning view in the morning. A true Slope Oak start to the day.
The name? The ride starts on Temple Mountain Road, where it intersects US-24 and heads toward the Reef and the turn-off to Goblin Valley State Park. After climbing up the route heads down to meet I-70. After crossing underneath, it heads to Black Dragon Canyon. A short ride through a drainage tunnel and then on to the Hatts Ranch Bypass road where I camped for the night. A crazy windy night, then back on Hatts to US-24 for a 17-mile road ride to the car.
- Last day, looking back where the dirt road intersects US-24. Someone was nice enough to cut the bottom strand of barbed wire so I could get myself and the bike through with only mild snagging.
- The calm before the storm- windstorm. Probably the worst windstorm I’ve been in- four hours of dust-blowing tent-collapse-threatening wind from 11 PM to 3 AM.
- Happy camper.
- Millefoie
- The cottonwoods were glowing
- Camp, night two
- Burning bush
- Black Dragon canyon bottom. Rained the previous days, a bit of standing water.
- Sometimes my shadow looks like a cowboy on a horse. This time it’s more WWI doughboy.
- Pano
- The entrance to Black Dragon canyon. An hour-long super fun mildly technical baby-head strewn downhill roller coaster to the bottom of the canyon.
- Lunch break. I don’t normally carry a bulky foam pad but it made last night’s freezing temps a non-issue. It worked out really well.
- Wild burros. Need a telephoto.
- Decisions.
- Will I make it? Will my butt stop hurting?
- Ready to roll into Day Two. My butt hurts. Want to do 30-40 miles today. My butt disagrees.
- Desert camping is the best camping.
- The Ulv in it’s natural environment.
- Rise and shine
